Stolen WhatsApp accounts

A stolen or hacked WhatsApp account is used to ask your family and friends for money — in your name, from your number.

How the account is actually taken

WhatsApp verifies you with a code sent by SMS. If someone obtains that code, they register your number on their device and you are logged out. The approach is almost always the same: a message or call claiming a code was sent to you by mistake. In essence it is account hacking — what people call “tahkeer” — carried out by trickery rather than technical skill.

“Sorry, I sent you a code by mistake — can you forward it?”
“I'm having trouble receiving my code, please send it to me.”
“Verify your number to keep using WhatsApp.”

What follows — the family-emergency scam

Once inside, the thief messages your contacts pretending to be you: an emergency, a hospital bill, a payment that cannot wait, and always to an account that is not yours. Your contacts trust the number, not the wording — which is why this works.

Get your account back
Re-register your number in WhatsApp using the SMS code — that logs the thief out. If you had two-step verification on, you already have the protection; if not, turn it on now. Tell your contacts plainly that your account was taken and that any money request in your name is false.
Report it
Report the incident to the national cyber channel for your country, and to WhatsApp inside the app. If money was sent by a contact, they should contact their bank immediately — speed is what decides recovery.
