Your phone number is now a key to your bank account. That is why mobile operators are impersonated so heavily.
What it looks like
The message claims to come from your mobile operator and usually offers something, or threatens to cut you off — it is usually a phishing message designed to steal your details:
“Your line will be disconnected — confirm your details.”
“You have a free data upgrade waiting — claim it here.”
“We are switching to 5G — verify your number to continue.”
“Your SIM needs re-registration.”
SIM-swap: how the number itself is stolen
In a SIM-swap, a criminal convinces the operator to move your number onto a SIM they hold. Your phone loses signal, and every call and every bank code now goes to them. It is usually combined with a fake “confirm your details” approach so they have enough information to pass verification.
The red flags
Unexpected loss of mobile signal for no reason. A message that your SIM or number has changed. A request to confirm details or read out a code. An offer that is too easy, with a link.
What to do
Contact your operator through their official app or the number on their official website — never through a link in the message. If you have lost signal unexpectedly, ask them directly whether a SIM change or port-out was requested on your number. Then tell your bank, because your incoming codes may have been compromised. Report any scam message or call made in the operator's name through the operator's official channel.
